Hi, I’m Mary! I hold a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in History from Newcastle University and am preparing to begin my master’s degree in History. I achieved a Grade 9 in GCSE History, an A* in A-Level History and an A* in A-Level English Literature. I also have over a year of experience tutoring GCSE and A-Level students across History, English Literature and Religious Studies.
My lessons are relaxed, supportive and tailored to the individual needs of each student. I understand that every learner has different strengths, goals and areas of difficulty, so I adapt my teaching style and resources accordingly. I aim to create an encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, expressing their ideas and learning from mistakes.
Lessons are typically one hour long and may include interactive discussion, visual resources, retrieval activities, close textual analysis, source evaluation, comparison of scholars, essay planning, model paragraphs and practice examination questions.
In History, I help students understand how events and developments connect, analyse sources and interpretations, and construct well-supported arguments. In English Literature, we focus on close analysis, themes, characters, quotations and the effective use of language, structure and form. In A-Level Religious Studies, I help students understand complex philosophical, ethical and theological ideas, compare contrasting viewpoints and develop clear, reasoned judgements.
A major focus of my teaching is essay writing and examination technique. I help students understand what questions are asking, organise their ideas clearly, select relevant evidence and produce analytical, evaluative and well-structured responses.
Whether a student is looking to improve their confidence, strengthen their subject knowledge or prepare for an upcoming examination, each lesson is designed around their individual needs and academic goals.
