I believe that teaching history to students from years 7 to 11 should be approachable, fun, and real. Honestly, I didn't go to university until 2020, and as a mature student I understand how studying and how intimidating history can feel. Sometimes it does seem to be just dates and names to remember, but there's a lot more to history! We would look at primary sources, like letters, photos, or newspaper articles, to try and understand what people at the time really thought and felt. I would provide guidance on how to research relevant information and check sources, so you can learn what is reliable and what is not. We could look at essay writing, breaking it down step by step to write a clear introduction, to build a strong argument using evidence, and then finishing with your conclusion which shows how your ideas work together. For younger students, your curiosity could be sparked by using quizzes, stories, or creating a digital timeline which would highlight how history can sometimes be surprising. My goal is to show that history is not just about the past - it is all around us, a skill for life, and everyone can find something to enjoy in it.
