Hi, I'm Abubakar! I'm currently studying for a PGCE in History with QTS at University College London (UCL) and completing my school placement as a Trainee History Teacher at St Bonaventure's School in East London. I also have a 2:1 degree in History and Politics from The Open University.
I've always had an interest in History, particularly understanding how events from the past have shaped the world we live in today. One of the reasons I decided to go into teaching was because I wanted to help students develop that same curiosity. I believe History is much more interesting when you understand why something happened rather than simply remembering dates and names for an exam.
During my school placement, I've been working with Year 7 students studying Medieval Christendom. This has given me the opportunity to observe different teaching methods and develop my own understanding of how to explain historical topics to students with different abilities and learning needs.
My tutoring sessions would be shaped around each student's needs. I would usually start by finding out what topics they are studying, what they feel confident with and what they find difficult. From there, we would work through topics together using explanations, discussions, historical sources and practice questions.
For GCSE and A-Level students, I would also focus on essay writing, source analysis, structuring arguments and exam techniques. For KS3 students, I would focus more on building a good foundation in History and helping them become comfortable with historical concepts and ideas.
I understand that not everyone learns at the same pace or in the same way. I want my lessons to be somewhere students feel comfortable asking questions, even if they think the question is silly. I would rather spend extra time helping someone properly understand a topic than rush through material just to finish a lesson.
My main goal is to help students feel more confident in History, improve their academic skills and hopefully develop an interest in the subject beyond the classroom. I offer both online and in-person tutoring in London.
