The Best Digital Tools for Language Learning

With the advent of technology, there has never been a better time to learn a language online. There are many benefits to learning a new language online, including being able to learn at your own pace and in your own time, and being able to access free online resources as well as paid courses. However, it is important to make sure that you have a clear learning objective and that the course you choose aligns with your goals. This post outlines some ways to make the most of the digital tools at your disposal in your language learning journey.

  1.  Online Bilingual Dictionaries
Gone are the days when you would have to carry large volumes of dictionaries to build your vocabulary in a new language. With freely available monolingual and bilingual online dictionaries like Linguee, WordReference–or even digitised versions of the classics like Le Robert–you can easily access definitions, synonyms, and notes from native speakers all in the same place.

  2. Podcasts
Podcasts are one of the most effective ways of familiarising yourself with a new language. So, not only can you listen to hours and hours of content by native speakers, but you can also learn about different subjects or build up your own interests while learning a new language. Isn't technology just wonderful?

  3. Online Forums and Language Groups
If you ever feel overwhelmed by the vastness of a language or the complexity of its grammar, remember that you are not alone. One of the biggest gifts of the internet is its power of connecting people across the world. So, don't hesitate to sign up for a language group where you can exchange notes, talk out your frustrations about particularly frustrating topics or even just practice your language skills. Apps and websites like Meetup and Tandem protect your privacy while allowing you to practice your language with friends all over the world.

This is, of course, not an exhaustive list. The possibilities of using digital tools for your language learning journey are endless. You could build vocabulary lists with Excel or Google Sheets, you could practice your grammar, or you could hire a private tutor to bring all these resources to you!
