Primary education for children aged 5-11

Advert description
Hello, I'm Kate. I am an experienced primary teacher with 23 years' experience in education, working with children across the full primary age range.

I recently left full-time classroom teaching after spending the last 10 years at Ospringe CE Primary School in Faversham, where I taught a range of year groups and was also Assistant Headteacher for five years. I am now looking forward to using my experience in a more individual way through private tutoring.

I offer online tuition across the UK and face-to-face tuition in and around Faversham, supporting children with Primary English, Maths, Reading, Phonics and SATs.

Throughout my teaching career I have worked with children of different ages, abilities and learning needs. I have extensive experience identifying gaps in children's understanding, adapting lessons and finding different ways to explain concepts when a child is struggling.

I have particular experience in:

Primary English and Maths
Reading and comprehension
Phonics
Spelling, grammar and writing
Times tables and arithmetic
Problem solving and reasoning
SATs preparation
Supporting children who have gaps in their learning
Supporting children who have lost confidence
Working with children with SEND and additional learning needs

I have also been directly involved in formal assessment throughout my teaching career. I have administered Year 2 and Year 6 SATs, the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check and the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check, as well as undertaking external assessment moderation.

This gives me a good understanding of the expectations of primary assessments and how to help children prepare without making learning feel overwhelming.

I don't believe that tutoring should simply mean giving a child more worksheets or repeating what they have already done at school.

Before starting tuition, I like to understand what the child is finding difficult, what they are already confident with and what they would like to achieve. I can then tailor sessions to their individual needs.

I use a mixture of explanation, questioning, discussion, guided practice and independent activities. I regularly check understanding throughout a lesson and adapt my approach if something isn't making sense.

I believe that mistakes are an important part of learning. I want children to feel comfortable saying "I don't understand" or having another g
