Advert description
I'm currently in year 4 of clinical training as a medical student at the University of Edinburgh, having completed a BSc (Hons) in Medicine at the University of St Andrews. Biology has been the backbone of my own education, ensuring that I am highly proficient in teaching the subject.
My tutoring background:
- Peer tutor for 5 years, throughout high school, supporting students in science and maths.
- 4 years as a Kumon tutor, providing support alongside the Kumon curriculum in maths and reading for students aged 5 to 17. Kumon's structure meant working with students individually, tracking their progress closely, and adjusting pace based on where each student actually was, not a generic timeline.
- Alongside this, I've delivered health education sessions to school-age children through volunteer teaching programmes during my time at St Andrews, which involved breaking down more complex biological and medical concepts for younger audiences.
My teaching approach adapts to the student rather than following a single fixed method. I present a concept through several different explanations or examples until it actually lands, since students rarely all learn the same way. I also pay close attention to the difference between a student who needs more repetition and practice to consolidate something they already understand, and one who needs the concept itself explained differently. Treating these as the same problem usually doesn't help either student.
My medical training gives me an additional advantage when it comes to biology and physiology specifically. I have a working understanding of how these systems function in practice, which means I can go beyond the syllabus when a student is curious, connect concepts to real clinical relevance, and explain the reasoning behind a process rather than just the process itself. This tends to make the material easier to remember and more engaging, especially for students who want more than a surface-level answer.
I aim to tailor sessions to what will actually help the students I teach!
