Shakana Ravindran

I have experience tutoring primary-aged students for the 11+ and working as a Teaching Assistant in a specialist educational setting, supporting students with different learning needs. I am also preparing to begin my Science teacher training, giving me a strong foundation in both Science subject knowledge and teaching strategies.

My lessons are friendly, engaging and tailored to each student’s individual needs, ability and learning goals. I believe that students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions and are encouraged to make mistakes as part of the learning process.

At the beginning of each lesson, I will briefly recap previous learning and use a few questions to identify any areas that may need further explanation. I then introduce the new topic by breaking complex Science concepts into clear, manageable steps. I use a combination of explanations, diagrams, worked examples, questioning and practical real-life examples to help students understand and remember key ideas.

Lessons are interactive rather than simply being teacher-led. I encourage students to explain their thinking, answer questions and apply their knowledge to different scenarios. We will work through examples together before gradually moving towards independent questions, allowing me to identify and address any misconceptions.

For students preparing for exams, I can incorporate exam-style questions, revision techniques, topic tests and timed practice into lessons. I can also help students develop their confidence with scientific vocabulary and learn how to structure answers effectively.

Most importantly, I want every student to leave each lesson feeling more confident, understanding something they previously found difficult, and motivated to continue learning.
