Finlay Hayward

Hi I'm Finlay, a second year MSci Biochemistry student at the University of Sheffield. Both Chemistry and Biology can be challenging subjects with problem solving, mathematical, practical and exam technique elements that emerge at A Level that often require deeper explanation and refinement of skills than can be found in the school classroom. Therefore, my priority is fostering a supportive and productive working relationship with my tutees to ensure they achieve their full potential.

To build toward this, my lessons are closely based on the exam board syllabus - allowing both my tutees and I to keenly identify their weaker areas that require more allocated time. In addition, this ensures all content I teach is exclusively exam-relevant. Worksheets and flashcards are my dominant resources for revision - encouraging active recall that is proven to extend memory and understanding far more efficiently than listening to PowerPoint presentations or reading through notes. Spaced repetition is also a key element of my lessons - each begins with a starter from a previous one to continually test and improve the knowledge my tutees have gained.

I have experience as both a private tutor for Science and Mathematics and as a wellbeing student mentor within my own school environment. Through this, I have seen my tutees achieve above and beyond the results they desired - exceeding the standards of their destination of choice. For me this is the true reward of this position. I have also undertaken a month long placement as a teaching assistant.
