My Maths lessons are calm, structured and tailored to the individual needs of each student. As a secondary Maths teacher and SENCo, I have experience teaching students with a wide range of abilities, including those with SEND and students who may lack confidence in Maths.
Lessons begin by identifying the student’s current understanding and any gaps or misconceptions that may be preventing progress. I then break mathematical concepts into clear, manageable steps, using teacher modelling, worked examples and questioning before giving students opportunities to practise independently.
The content of each lesson is adapted to the student’s individual goals. Lessons may focus on current school topics, revisiting areas of difficulty, closing gaps in prior knowledge, developing core mathematical skills or preparing for GCSE examinations. For GCSE students, I can also incorporate exam-style questions, problem-solving and exam technique.
As a SENCo, I understand that students learn in different ways. I adapt the pace, explanations and level of support to suit each learner. This may include breaking tasks into smaller steps, using visual representations, revisiting prerequisite knowledge, providing additional processing time and explaining a concept in different ways until the student feels secure.
I regularly check understanding throughout the lesson rather than simply moving on once a question has been completed correctly. This allows me to identify misconceptions quickly and adjust my teaching where necessary.
Most importantly, my lessons provide a supportive environment where students are encouraged to ask questions and are not afraid to make mistakes. I aim to gradually build both mathematical understanding and independence so that students become more confident in approaching Maths on their own.
