I’m definitely a pen-and-paper tutor! I like to work through problems alongside my students, breaking each question down step by step and encouraging them to write out their own working rather than simply memorising answers.
Lessons will usually begin with a quick recap before we focus on a particular topic, work through examples together and then try practice questions independently. If something isn’t clicking, we’ll approach it differently rather than repeatedly using the same explanation.
For English, I use reading, discussion, writing exercises and schoolwork to develop comprehension, vocabulary and written communication.
My lessons are relaxed and encouraging, but structured. I want students to feel completely comfortable saying “I don’t understand” or getting something wrong. Having previously supported children at a homework club, I’ve learned that confidence can make a huge difference to how willing a child is to learn.
