I like to test my tutees first and see where they are at. After that my lessons are tailored topic by topic to address all of the student's weaker subjects. I like to spend dedicated time on them and test them individually before moving forward - kind of like how the modules are structured in school.
I do this through 2 hour online lessons where I monitor and direct students through worksheets, problems, activities and information. These can be completed online where possible but I often prefer students to print it out and do the work in front of them, as that is how their actual exams and assessments in school will be formatted.
I prefer to mix creating my own resources with using some of those that are available online. I can draw from my experience revising for my GCSEs (in which I acheived all 9s) and my B2 DALF French Assessment. The resources I have used and I currently use can be really helpful in supporting students but I also recognise that sometimes they need something more tailored to them.
Lastly, I really think its important to get to know my students. Everyone learns differently and the benefit of me providing 1-on-1 support is that often they don't have that in school. Unlike teachers in school, I can take the time to find out exactly what engages my students so that they don't only improve but grow interested in the subject I teach. If they can foster a passion for learning, then they will enjoy the work and therefore do better at it. That is my number one goal in tutoring.
