I have 6 months of experience in tutoring GCSE students of varying ability. I mainly tutor in person and 1:1, but I am keen to start exploring online and group tuition too.
My students actually prefer it when I teach without a rigid lesson structure. However my lessons tend to follow the same principles: the student comes to me with topics that they struggle with beforehand, I collate resources such as worksheets and diagrams that might be useful, and scaffold the topic gradually until they are able to complete exam questions, and understand how the topic fits into the bigger picture of mathematics.
I also ensure students build their core skills that build the foundation of their ability. Regularly practicing base skills like rearranging and factorising means that these are not the limiting factor when they solve higher demand questions.
Since I am not much older than most of my students, my lessons tend to be more casual than formal.
Part of why I enjoy tutoring is that I am not naturally gifted in it. For example, in my December Further Maths mock, I got a C. After many hours of hard study and connecting the dots, in my most recent mock I got an A*.
Instead, I had to gradually build my understanding of maths over time. I believe this benefits my students - as some tutors may skip some details of an explaination as they might think it is trivial - yet I understand what some students struggle with
