My lessons are designed around each student’s goals, level, interests and preferred way of learning. At the beginning, I will discuss what you would like to achieve and then plan lessons that suit you. Depending on your needs, we can focus on conversation, pronunciation, grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary or Japanese culture.

I like lessons to be practical and interactive rather than simply following a textbook from beginning to end. We may use everyday situations, short conversations, pictures, stories, articles or topics that you are interested in. For younger learners, I can include games, picture books and simple activities to make Japanese enjoyable and easier to remember. For teenagers and adults, lessons can be adapted for study, travel, work, hobbies or general conversation practice.

I am a native Japanese speaker with a BA in Japanese Literature, where I also studied Japanese phonology and comparative linguistics. I am a qualified Early Years teacher and have experience teaching and supporting children of different ages. This has taught me to notice when a learner is unsure and to change my explanation, examples or approach rather than simply repeating the same thing.

I also enjoy explaining the cultural context behind Japanese expressions, including differences between formal and casual language and what sounds natural in different situations.

My aim is to create a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, experimenting with Japanese and making mistakes. I want each lesson to help you understand a little more, communicate with more confidence and enjoy using Japanese.
