What happens in a First Principles Academy lesson goes far beyond sitting through another lecture or copying notes off a board. Every session is designed as an active, high-trust dialogue where students transition from passive listeners into sharp, independent problem-solvers.
Lesson Structure & Dynamics
The 10-Minute First-Principles Diagnostic: We begin by stripping away formulas to test core understanding. Instead of asking, "What formula do we use here?" we ask, "What physical law or logical rule governs this system?"
Deconstructing Non-Standard Questions: The middle portion of the lesson is hands-on application. We take tricky SQA National 5, Higher, or A-Level context questions and break them into manageable logical steps using interactive digital whiteboards and real-world models.
Metacognitive Check & Reframing: Before we finish, the student explains the concept back in their own words. This solidifies long-term memory, builds exam composure, and ensures they can tackle unseen questions on exam day without panic.
Experience & Academic Rigour
As a PhD graduate in Biophysics from the University of Edinburgh, and STEM researcher (USA, UK), and a science literacy researcher featured in The Herald, my mentorship brings true academic rigour directly to school-level STEM.
Whether we meet online or in-person in Edinburgh, lessons are structured, encouraging, and focused entirely on empowering pupils to ask why before how—building unshakeable logic, confidence, and curiosity that lasts a lifetime.
