I have used mentors and coaching personally, at the start of my Bachelor on Social Science. I think it's important that students of all levels develop their confidence in understanding the subject matter but grow in their confidence to write and speak about it also. Students should be comfortable using mentors as a sounding board for ideas about their future career paths, using their A Levels and Degrees as a springboard to further study and specialism. Having experienced tutelage from mentors myself, I understand fully how important that support can be, and how it can make such a profound change on the study experience of students.

I prefer to use reflective methods so that students can discuss what they have learned in a way that really makes them think about it, forming their own opinions on the topics and understanding not only the impact of learning, but the impact of that topic and what it means to them. I would like tutoring sessions to feel supportive and conversational, giving students space to ask questions, explore ideas and reflect without feeling judged. I would encourage students to use reflection both in everyday life and when engaging with their reading, considering what stood out to them, why it was important, and how it might influence their thinking or understanding going forward.
