My teaching approach is very informal and encourages critical thinking. I will help students to come to their own understanding of the concepts and will assist them in developing their own ideas about the topic in question.
My lessons will primarily be structured around problem solving: students come to me with areas they are having trouble understanding, and I will help them detangle and deepen their grasp of these topics. I will use some basic materials to guide my teaching but the lesson will be primarily discussion-based. Although I don't have any formal teaching experience, I do have experience leading evening study groups both at school and university. I realised that the most effective learning environment when trying to understand complex concepts is an informal, discussion-based dynamic where both parties feel able to ask questions, no matter how 'silly'. So as well as covering content to the appropriate standard of academic rigour, I find getting to know my students and making them feel comfortable is just as important when it comes to learning. Because (from personal experience) it is when students feel able to ask any question at all that the true engagement happens.
I have expertise in the following areas: Marx, Weber, nation-state formation, labour movements, democratisation, imperialism & post-colonial development, citizenship and migration, politics and media, populism, neoliberalism, The Frankfurt School and Critical Theory, Foucault, postcolonialism & decolonialism, far right movements e.g. classical fascism/neo-fascism, the alt-right and the manosphere, theories of social class (e.g. Bourdieu), the in/compatibility of capitalism and democracy, central banking and monetary policy, democratic theory, social, political and economic inequality.
I specialise mainly in advanced economies and Western societies and have written theses on neoliberalism and independent central banking. I would be delighted to tutor in any of the above topics up to and including Bachelor's level. I find sociology fascinating and I am excited to share my passion!
