With over 2 years of experience teaching A Level Chemistry, I've honed in on the best ways to help students maximise their grades and, more importantly, actually understand the subject. I know first-hand how daunting Chemistry can feel: topics that seem like complete gibberish one week can suddenly click into place the next, once they're explained the right way. That's exactly what I aim to do in every lesson.
Understanding is king. My goal in every lesson is to get students to that point, not by rushing through content, but by making sure the fundamentals are genuinely understood. Once real understanding is reached, Chemistry can actually become enjoyable, something to be approached with confidence rather than dread.
My teaching leans on visual learning, which I've found to be the most effective ways to grasp Chemistry. A good rule of thumb: if you can draw a diagram to explain a topic, you truly understand it. I use this principle throughout my lessons, encouraging students to visualise processes and structures rather than just memorise facts.
I also take a holistic approach to teaching. Chemistry topics are rarely isolated; they connect and build on one another, forming a bigger picture. By helping students see these connections, I make sure their knowledge feels joined-up rather than a set of separate facts to memorise.
What a Typical Lesson Might Include:
- Reviewing the assignment set in the previous session
- Assessing and reinforcing understanding of new content covered at school
- Revisiting past topics to strengthen foundational knowledge
- Mini tests each session to track progress and highlight areas to revisit
- Past paper walkthroughs, especially as exams approach, to build exam technique and confidence
Personalised teaching plans and resources are provided for each student.
