Affordable Private English Lessons

My name is Jonathan Walsh and I’m a full-time private tutor, running my own business from home. I’ve been teaching students of all ages, from as young as 4 years old to some in their mid 50’s, and with varying degrees of aptitude, for more than 6 years now. I’m a fluent and eloquent native English speaker, and even though my teaching background is more specific to music, I believe my skills are transferable.

I’m a friendly, reliable, patient and engaging person. As a teacher I have learnt that it is important to build a good rapport with my students so that they enjoy and look forward to their lessons with me. I have taught many hundreds of students and achieved great success to this end. I happen to be learning a foreign language at time of writing, so I also believe that I am well placed to understand the perspective of both tutor and student.

My background is as a musician, and I have studied classical piano to a Grade 8 standard. I am also currently preparing one of my younger student’s (who has just turned 10 years old) for his Grade 2 exam. Learning an instrument has afforded me many valuable pedagogical insights. When learning an instrument, the most important skill is to learn how to learn, and to this end I feel I have made great strides not just in my ability to teach but also in my ability to learn. As I mentioned above, I am currently learning another language, and the skills I have picked up from my years of study at the piano are proving invaluable as I negotiate the early stages of my studies in Portuguese. As a teacher, I try to make my classes fun and engaging, because I think it goes without saying that if the classes are fun it greatly facilitates the education experience. I see this myself with my students (of all ages), that the more fun they have as they practice, then so much faster is their development. I also have experience as a proof-reader, having recently reviewed and suggested amendments to one of my student’s PhD’s. I also regularly assist her with emails and the finer points of English grammar.

I am available for both online and in person lessons during the week depending on my schedule. I'm looking forward to meeting you :)
