To ensure that students develop a strong understanding of the subject and feel confident in approaching exam questions, I begin by identifying the areas they find most challenging. I regularly ask students which topics, concepts, processes, or types of questions they find complicated. This allows me to address specific difficulties rather than assuming that all students have the same learning needs. Student feedback is an important part of my lesson planning, as it helps me identify misconceptions and areas where additional explanation, practice, or revision may be required. I also make an effort to identify students’ areas of interest and use these interests where possible to make lessons more engaging and relevant. Understanding what students are interested in can help me select appropriate examples, case studies, geographical contexts, and discussion topics. This approach allows students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world situations and encourages them to become more actively involved in their learning. My lessons are structured progressively and follow the requirements of the Cambridge syllabus. I generally introduce content step by step, ensuring that students have a secure understanding of the fundamental concepts before moving on to more complex ideas. Rather than focusing only on memorising information, I encourage students to understand relationships between geographical processes, causes and consequences, and the application of knowledge to different contexts. Past paper questions are an important part of this process. I regularly incorporate exam-style questions into lessons so that students become familiar with the language, command words, mark schemes, and expectations of Cambridge examinations. We discuss questions together and analyse what the question is actually asking before considering how an effective answer should be structured. This helps students develop the ability to interpret questions independently rather than simply recalling information. To ensure understanding, I aim for each lesson to finish with an exam-style question or short task that allows students to apply what they have learned. This provides both the student and teacher with an immediate indication of whether the main learning objectives have been achieved.
