By doing a needs analysis of spoken and written production and getting to know the personality of the student and how he or she learns best. For exam prep classes, I ensure that the student does a short practice listening and reading for the same purpose. I then prepare classes to fit the needs and profile of each student. I tend not to correct very much, but prefer making notes and giving follow up correction. This is to encourage fluency. I give pre-class tasks to inform the classes and follow up work to ensure progress. I use WhatsApp or Padlet for these tasks depending on the type of student.
