IT & Computing Lecturer with 25 years teaching experience

Throughout my teaching career, I have taught learners at a wide range of levels and with differing abilities, adapting my teaching methods to meet individual learning needs. My experience includes teaching programming, networking, databases, project management and web development. Most recently, I have taught HNC Computing units including Programming using Python, Networking, Database Software, and Project Planning. Programming is a particular strength of mine, and I have experience with Java, Python, C#, SQL, JavaScript, HTML and CSS. I have also used Python with Tkinter and have experience with Unity and Cisco technologies. My BSc (Hons) in Computing (Internet Systems), HND in Computing and CertEd in Further Education provide a strong academic and teaching foundation for the role. A key strength I would bring to online tutoring is my ability to explain complex technical concepts in a clear, accessible and patient manner. I understand that learners do not all learn in the same way, and I regularly adapt my explanations, examples and activities depending on a student's existing knowledge and confidence. I use visual and interactive resources, questioning, demonstrations and practical activities to help learners understand concepts rather than simply memorising information. I have extensive experience supporting students with coursework, assessments, projects and examination preparation. In my teaching roles, I have provided both formative and summative feedback, marked submissions and resubmissions, and supported learners in identifying areas for improvement. As a Lead Internal Verifier and Digital T Level Lead, I have also developed assessment plans, monitored the quality of student work and supported learners in meeting demanding assessment criteria. I particularly enjoy helping learners overcome difficulties and develop the confidence to solve problems independently. In one-to-one tutoring, I would aim to understand the student's current level, identify any gaps in their knowledge and then build their skills progressively through explanation, guided practice and increasingly independent problem-solving. I would also encourage students to ask questions and explore solutions, creating a positive learning environment where they feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them
