Native-Level Japanese Tutor / I give Japanese lessons beyond language: culture, literature, and history

I am currently a BA Fine
Art student at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, and an artist living
and working between London and Tokyo. Having grown up across Japan, China, and the
United States, I bring a genuinely global perspective to both language learning and cultural
communication.
My motivation for teaching Japanese is closely connected to my own practice and personal
development. I am deeply invested in continuously refining my Japanese language skills
while also communicating Japanese culture through my painting and artistic work. Through
my education and lived experience, I have come to understand Japanese not only as a
language, but as a system shaped by history, postwar culture, subcultures, and critical
thought. This allows me to teach Japanese from a multifaceted perspective, connecting
language with its cultural, historical, and social foundations.
In addition to everyday and academic Japanese, I am particularly familiar with postwar
Japanese culture, contemporary art, subcultural movements, and critical discourse. I believe
this background enables me to support students who are interested not only in linguistic
fluency, but also in understanding how Japanese functions within broader cultural and
ideological contexts. Lessons can therefore be adapted to suit learners with interests in art,
culture, media, or theory, as well as those seeking practical conversational or academic
skills.
Having grown up alongside multiple languages myself, I understand the challenges involved
in language learning. This personal experience allows me to teach.
