My approach to teaching comes from my own academic journey, starting as a struggling student and becoming a published researcher.

This is a great question. Teaching is an art and different individuals will have different approaches to teaching based on their personal traits etc. The first step I take is understanding the student(s), what engages them, and what sort of learning style suits them. My opinion is that the best way of learning is via a combination of worksheet tasks (GCSE/A Level learning ultimately is graded via a mark scheme), and (or followed by) positive and enthusiastic conversation with the student, breaking down tasks they dont understand from foundational knowledge in a granular way that provides the student with the context they need to understand a topic/concept. The best way to engage a student at the beginning of or before a tutoring session is to use meaningful, exciting real-world applications to the topic they are studying. Also persistent encouragement throughout is essential. Worksheets, PowerPoint presentations, real-world case studies, excellent passive listening skills and tailored communication. Patience is absolutely essential.
