I am an enthusiastic communicator with a biology degree and diverse experience making education accessible for people of all ages.

Advert description
I am writing to apply for the position of English Teacher. My passion for teaching young audiences began during my year at the Oxford Learning Lab, where I co-created Vertex’s first-in person summer programme, designing a curriculum, as well leading practical and classroom lessons and resources and organising enrichment days for disadvantaged students aged 4-18. The goal of the Learning Lab was to make education a fun experience away from examination. Seeing the fantastic progress by our students from fun lessons I created, such as a ‘murder mystery day’ to teach DNA sequencing, and a ‘build your own degradable pill’ lesson to teach about enteric coatings, I discovered that I thrive whilst engaging young people in unique and creative ways, and, more crucially, it works. As a personal mentor to the students, as well as being a project manager for the Diversity and Inclusion team across three international Learning Labs, I understood that intersectionality is a paramount consideration whilst creating content for children. Seeing children go from shy and unsure of their own abilities, to standing up and speaking to a room of peers or leading their groups made me understand the importance of 1:1 mentorship, and how powerful understanding individual learning styles are to make education exciting for each student. This also inspired me to start my own podcast for young audiences, The Big Fat Questions podcast. Using the ethos of accessibility and our ‘education away from examination’, I was able to interview high-profile guests such as Will Poulter to entice young audiences to learn about fun, factual topics that they would actually be interested in. I’ve learnt that children need to feel safe, respected and understood in order to want to learn. This is a lesson I’ve learnt as I've also volunteered with children across my career. This includes as drama club leader and creator, a volunteer with disabled children at MenPhys and with the Story Museum in Oxford, leading craft sessions for children and engaging them with the exhibits. Overall, I have dedicated my life and career to making education fun and accessible to children, and I believe I would bring positivity, enthusiasm and creativity to this role to get students excited about the possibilities that learning English can hold
