Advert description
I am a second-year History student at the University of Edinburgh, with a strong academic background in History, English Literature and Politics at A Level. These subjects developed my ability to think critically, write with clarity, and approach ideas from multiple perspectives — skills I now enjoy sharing with students.
Alongside my studies, I have gained valuable teaching and mentoring experience. At Edinburgh, I was elected Undergraduate Representative on the History Society Committee, where I coordinated academic talks, public events, and digital outreach. I regularly contribute political commentary and cultural features to The Student, the university’s independent newspaper. Beyond university, I have volunteered extensively in education and community roles: supporting SEND students with history exam preparation, mentoring as a Youth Ambassador for the charity Boys in Mind, and volunteering with Age UK and SLURP (Student Action for Homelessness).
These experiences have taught me the importance of patience, clear communication, and tailoring support to individual needs. Having struggled with exam anxiety in the past, I understand the pressures students face and prioritise building both academic ability and confidence.
My lessons involve engaging and varied activities to help pupils develop their understanding, beyond just memorising exam answers. We will use mind maps, model exam answers, content quizzes and relevant contextual information from fields such as art and literature. My approach as a tutor is supportive, structured, and flexible, helping students break down complex ideas and develop strong analytical and writing skills. This will help to build students confidence and engagement in their studies of history... which I promise really can be more than just dates and dead people!
