French and English tuition tailored to all levels, delivered by a globe-trotter, translator and former journalist

Advert description
I'm a modern languages (French and Spanish) graduate and have lived in various parts of France, Spain and South America for over eight years. I have a very wide circle of interests and enjoy making connections between what my students like doing in their spare time and my lessons to make learning more fun and relevant.
I have tutored a broad spectrum of ages and abilities, from primary school children to adult learners, including teaching English at university level in France after graduation, when I worked with a wide variety of abilities and class sizes.
I'm a great believer in the power of visual aids, especially in vocabulary learning. Grammar is an important part of any language and I feel it needn't be as intimidating as many people find it to be. I'm a very patient person and I aim to teach grammar as it's used in normal speech, rather than in isolation.
Although not a native speaker of French, I have frequently been mistaken for one thanks to my excellent pronunciation. However, as an English speaker I have the advantage of understanding the difficulties most frequently experienced by fellow English speakers in terms of both grammar and speaking as I've had to grapple with them myself!
I genuinely love languages and I feel that this enthusiasm really shines through.
I offer different lessons designed to suit different budgets, from less expensive conversational classes (14 GBP/hr) to more complex lessons (35 GBP/hr). I generally teach online but will visit students at their homes in the Edinburgh area for an additional charge.

Stephen asked what I would like to improve about my French, and responded with a tailored approach. We began at the beginning (literally with the alphabet!) and then focussed on pronunciation and comprehension. Stephen used various tasks in teaching me, and I appreciated that it was quite fun too, for example, discussing a real menu. I was able to ask questions and Stephen had the answers.

Stephen is a very professional tutor and really brought a personal approach. He tailored it to the areas I wanted to focus on, and gave me practical tasks like deciphering a menu, which met my brief of wishing to speak and understand French for travel purposes. It was really helpful that we start with the basics, like pronunciation! Stephen used a variety of tasks to keep me learning in different ways, and answered my questions clearly. Highly recommend.
