Advert description
I am a former editor and business journalist with many years of professional experience who recently completed a PhD in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter. For three years, I taught first and second-year undergraduates across a broad range of academic subjects covering Classical literature, ancient history, and material culture and civilisation, resulting in over 300 hours of teaching and marking experience. I have a deep passion for all the subjects that I am offering to teach. I am currently a personal tutor to some 20 students (covering both Latin language and Spanish), from beginners’ to post-secondary level. My classes are both online and in person (North Cornwall area).
I can teach the following (whether beginner’s level, GCSE, A-level, undergraduate):
- Latin language (all levels)
- Greco-Roman history (specialism Augustan principate)
- Greek and Latin literature (poetry and prose, all genres, specialism poetry of the Augustan period, Homer)
- Roman society and material culture
- Academic essay writing
I am above all a thoughtful teacher, emphasising kindness and respect above all other qualities. I will work hard to make sure I can help my students as much as possible, with lessons tailored to their individual needs. I am now an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a UK organisation leading teacher training at university level. In a written assessment undertaken at Exeter, my examiner said of my teaching, “There wasn’t a single moment in which [the students] weren’t completely focused on the task at hand… It’s a clear marker of how comfortable they felt that almost every student participated in the discussion. You took great care to give the students space, holding back at certain points to avoid disrupting their flow, which was really nice to see.”
My hourly rate is between £35-40 depending on specific requirements. Please reach out via the email address provided.
