I have taught a broad range of subjects covering literature, history and material culture to first and second-year undergraduates. Specific subjects include Latin language, ancient epic poetry, Greek and Roman drama, Roman laughter (covering a broad range of texts). I marked and graded essays for all of my literature modules, as well as for additional modules covering Women in Homer and the Age of Augustus. I normally worked with small groups of between 5-10 students which gave me the opportunity to understand each of my students’ learning strengths and challenges, tailoring my classes to their requirements. I also undertook extensive formal assessment of essays and commentaries for the department, offering students detailed feedback on the quality of their work. My experience as an editor and journalist has provided me with a unique insight into what makes a good piece of writing and so I have also tutored undergraduate students, both in small groups and on a one-on-one basis, in how to structure their academic essays and improve their writing skills more generally. Lessons will be an hour in length. The first lesson will be used to learn more about the student, what they hope to gain from the lessons, how I can help them, as well as determining the type of material that I will then cover so that I can tailor subsequent lessons to the student’s needs and requirements. This could be centred on specific subject areas or topics required for the student to pass a formal exam, whether GCSE, A-level or undergraduate, or it could be something more general for those students who want to learn about the subject in an informal way. Any students who are taught by me will automatically be given expert advice on how to structure and compose their written work, based on my many years of experience in this field.
