I tell students that I can remember what I was doing half a century ago (ie 1973) - so 50 years back from then would take us back to the years immediately following WW1! Meanwhile, my old school was founded in 1542, which was only 50 years after Columbus "discovered" America, and a whole century before the Civil War and the execution of Charles 1.....!
