After 2 years of tutoring students from inside and outside of my school, I have come to realize the importance of hollistic teaching in order to maximise the student's growth while boosting their confidence and desire for knowledge. I have taught a range of children, from teaching 6 year olds with learning disabilities to read to 16 year olds wanting to achieve 9s in their GCSEs.
Overall, the hour long lessons will be compartmentalized into 4 sections:
- A 7 minute review of the previous lesson to facilitate active recall, including quick fire questions and any queries from the student
- A 10 minute section to explain the task for today with examples (often a set of worksheets or practice paper)
- A 15-20 minute section for the student to attempt the task as thoroughly as they can, receiving limited hints from myself
- The rest of the session will include myself explaining the concepts that haven't yet been grasped, then asking the student to explain these in their own words, and then setting them a range of problems which they will now be able to solve, boosting confidence and their sense of academic self-esteem.
I teach from exam-board approved text books such as CGP books and I write up everything that has been covered in lessons electronically, so that a copy can be kept for the student, distributed for their carer, and one kept by myself to plan future lessons. I am happy to let sessions run over by an extra 10-15 minutes to ensure that my student is fully confident in the topics we cover.
