Lesson Goals
I am a big believer in student-led goal setting. I work with my students early to establish some goals that the student is interested in achieving. I also like for us to establish a clear beginning, middle, and end to our work together, so that we can hold each other accountable along the way.

Lesson Format
Again, this will be heavily influenced by the student's goals and desires, but I can tell you about my preferences. I prefer fast-paced lessons, moving quickly from one activity or topic to another. I like to establish procedures and routine, including opening and closing activities designed to spark and cement what we've learned in your mind. I like highly dynamic sessions that can occasionally get loud. I like to laugh - in fact, I think we learn the best when we're laughing and having a good time, not memorizing long lists of prefixes and suffixes.
Experience
I have a Master's of Education in Reading. I'm beginning a Ph.D. in Education in the fall of 2023. I was recently named an Emerging Literacy Leader of Texas by the Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading. I've been volunteering with an organization that teaches adults how to read for a little over ten years. I've also taught high school English for five years, and am certified to teach English as well as English as a Second Language. I'm also a big-time blogger, and I run a couple of personal websites that provide me with supplemental income. I've been doing that work for nearly 20 years and I've written and published millions of words along the way.
