In the span of my teaching career I have had learners from different backgrounds find joy in learning English. To my mind I remember 3 learners - Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Advanced having a common issue in pronunciation, form and meaning. All three of the learners found it difficult to understand the concept of idioms and took entire sentences at face value. As jovial the errors may have been, they never gave up their drive to understand meaning. Their tomorrow was at stake! I used natural yet accurate models of pronunciations, used CCQs and drilling techniques to patiently weave in solutions in a simple, easy-to-understand manner and had them employ the same idiom in question in a conversation with their partner. Their eyes lit up when they succeeded in the given task. They informed me of their resounding success when they used the language in their collegiate, professional and business settings. Their curiosity and their hard work fuelled my desire to do and be better. I am happy to report that my learners ended up getting the promotions due them as they were previously denied and college entrances essays and interviews were successfully achieved. I could not be happier! Let's learn!
