As a second-year medical student with strong A-level results I have both the knowledge and the passion for maths and science. To become a medical student I had to work hard but also efficiently so I understand the strategies to help students to reach those top grades. My own journey from GCSE results that were not the best for a medicine applicant to securing much stronger A-levels allowing meta become a medical student has helped me gain the empathy to help students who are finding studying difficult and help motivate them to improve.
My past experience through volunteering to tutor two year 12 students in face-to-face A-level chemistry I have gained the confidence to teach at both GCSE and A-level. I have learnt to break down unfamiliar and difficult concepts that commonly come up in maths and science, into manageable steps and efficient methods to tackle these problems as they come up in exams. I also like to make my teaching sessions as active as possible by keeping the student involved in each step of their learning by asking guiding questions so students learn through their own reasoning rather than simply giving them the material to learn on their own. This will helps students build a genuine understanding and helps with recall.
I have also participated in a mock interview circuit for medical school applicants where I was able to give constructive feedback in short time for while listening to the student during the interview. I was also able to quickly pick up on points where the student needs to improve, the resources they should use, how to practise and what they went well. I believe these experiences have helped me gain the qualities of a good tutor in motivating students, communication and the passion to teach.
