Hi, I'm Sienna, a second-year Actuarial Science student at LSE, and I've been tutoring maths and chemistry for just over a year now. I started almost by accident, helping a family friend's son with GCSE maths, and ended up enjoying it enough to build it into a proper tutoring practice. Since then I've worked with 12 students, helping them improve their grades by an average of 7%, while also juggling scheduling, pricing, and communicating with parents myself.

My lessons are built around figuring out how you think before jumping into content. In the first session, we usually go through a few problems together so I can see where your understanding is solid and where it starts to wobble, rather than assuming everyone needs the same explanation. From there, I tend to break things down into smaller, more concrete steps for concepts that feel abstract, and I always work through examples on paper or a whiteboard rather than just talking at you, since maths and chemistry are subjects you learn by doing, not by listening.

I also keep a close eye on exam technique, not just content, since I've found a lot of students lose marks on things they actually understand, just because of how they're presenting their working or reading the question under time pressure. Sessions are typically an hour, with a mix of explanation, guided practice, and independent problem-solving so I can see what's actually sticking versus what needs another pass.

Outside tutoring, I study a fairly quantitative degree myself, so I'm used to explaining technical material to people encountering it for the first time. I'm patient, adaptable, and genuinely enjoy the moment when something finally clicks, and I'd rather spend longer on a concept than move on before it's actually understood.
