I'm a first-year university student who has recently completed A levels in Maths, Biology and Sports Science (PE).
My GCSE and A level experience has taught me the importance of understanding core concepts behind a topic rather than treating the content as a memory game. By doing this, you can apply your knowledge to a wider range of questions, whilst feeling confident answering unfamiliar questions.
I hope to implement this mindset into my students via my teaching methods.
My lessons typically begin with an informal conversation/series of questions with the student about the topic to give an indication of the students current knowledge and understanding.
I like to explain concepts using a variety of methods e.g. Videos, case studies, analogies in order to find the most efficient way in which the student learns, whilst encouraging to ask as many questions as they would like until all gaps in knowledge have been filled.
I encourage my students to use active retrieval methods e.g. flashcards, blurting, to ensure that they are able to retain and recall knowledge before using practice questions to apply their knowledge to exam style questions.
My key messages to my students are :
Plan and organise your time - keep a healthy balance between studying and other hobbies
Don't be afraid to ask questions - uncertainty creates doubt in your own knowledge
Little and often - staying consistent with revision by breaking study sessions into smaller more frequent chunks is far more effecting than studying for hours on end or cramming the night before an exam
