My lessons are structured to build understanding and exam confidence step-by-step. I'll begin each session by introducing a relevant past paper question and asking the student how comfortable they feel approaching it - whether they recognise the topic, remember the method, or feel unsure.
If they’re unfamiliar or uncertain, we take a moment to break the topic down into its core concepts. I explain the key ideas in a clear, distilled way, often using flashcards or summary notes. I’ll provide these at first, but over time I encourage students to begin making their own, which deepens their understanding.
Next, I model how to approach the question by working through it myself, talking aloud to demonstrate my thought process and exam technique. Then we tackle a similar question together, with me guiding and gradually stepping back as their confidence grows.
The student then tries a comparable question independently. We go over it together, correcting any misunderstandings and reinforcing what went well. We often return to the original question (or a variation of it) to consolidate learning, with repetition and small changes helping to build fluency.
To finish, I may assign one or two short practice questions for the student to work on between sessions, and encourage them to create or expand their own flashcard set.
This structure helps students move from unfamiliarity to confidence, while reinforcing good habits for revision and exam performance.
