My lessons are relaxed but focused. I like to start by figuring out exactly where a student is struggling, whether that's a specific topic, exam technique, or general confidence with the subject, and build the session around that rather than following a rigid script. No two students need the same thing, so I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
In terms of format, I usually mix explanation with plenty of practice questions and past paper work, since biology really clicks once you start applying it rather than just reading about it. I use diagrams and real-world examples a lot, especially drawing on my own background in cancer research, to make abstract processes like cell division, genetics, or physiology feel more concrete and easier to visualise. If a student's stuck on something, I'll usually approach it a couple of different ways until it actually lands, rather than just repeating the same explanation.
I'm also happy to set homework or recommend resources between sessions if a student wants extra practice, and I keep track of the topics we've covered so we can revisit anything that needs reinforcing closer to exams.
On the experience side, I've got a BSc in Cancer Biomedicine from UCL and I'm about to start medicine at Cardiff, so I've recently gone through GCSEs, A-Levels, and a fairly competitive degree and med school application process myself. That means I can offer practical advice on revision techniques and exam strategy, not just the content itself. Every student learns differently, so I keep lessons flexible and check in regularly to make sure the pace and approach are actually working.
