My name is Rachael, and I hold a first-class honours BA in English Literature from the University of Exeter and an MA in Writing Poetry from London's prestigious 'Poetry School'. I have spent the last seven years in private English tuition, tutoring 1:1 sessions in English Literature, Language, and Creative Writing as well as tutoring small groups on the MyTutor Schools Programme. With over 2000 hours' experience, I now specialise in GCSE and A-Level exam preparation, specifically helping students refine their exam technique.

A little bit about me:

I'm a good-humoured tutor with a love of thorough research and extensive knowledge of literary history (earning the nickname "Belt and Braces" whilst at university).

I believe in studying literature within its cultural context. This brings the text to life and allows students to fully understand its place in the world. We might question how the music of the Elizabethan Period shapes Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, or consider the experiments of Luigi Galvani alongside our reading of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. This historicist approach has resulted in some really exciting essays from previous pupils, which have stood out from the crowd.

I feel my extensive resource collection, for both GCSE and A-Level English, allows me to make the lesson space a varied and exciting place to learn. I am meticulous in my preparation of material and enjoy tailoring lesson plans to the individual, such as those with SEN needs. I teach most exam board specifications daily (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas) and monitor progress by setting regular writing tasks.

To summarise, my teaching style is creative and exploratory whilst delivering a grounding in essay writing and/or exam technique where applicable.

We feel very lucky to have found Rachael for my daughter's final two years of high school. She is incredibly organised and has a real talent for spotting the small details that makes a big difference, which really helped build my daughter's confidence over time. Rachael has a calm and reassuring mamer that always put my daughter at ease. The feedback after each lesson was always clear and thoughtful, which we really appreciated as parents. Thanks to her support, my daughter achieved strong results, and we are truly grateful!
