My name is Pelayo, a first-year Mathematics student at the University of St Andrews. Having grown up all over the world across Turkey, South Africa and Spain I had to continuously adapt to new education systems, curricula and teaching styles from a young age. This experience gave me a deep understanding of how differently mathematics can be taught and learned, and has made me a naturally flexible and open-minded tutor, comfortable working with students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Having achieved an A in both IGCSE and A-Level Mathematics through the Cambridge International curriculum, I know these syllabuses well and understand exactly what examiners are looking for.

When it comes to the format of my lessons, I keep things structured but flexible, always adapting to what the individual student needs on that particular day. I typically begin each session by reviewing any areas of difficulty from the previous lesson before moving on to new material, ensuring understanding is built progressively and no gaps are left unaddressed.

I firmly believe that simply listening and watching is not the most effective way to master mathematics. My approach is an active and challenging one. Throughout each session I regularly stop to ask the student questions, testing their understanding in real time and keeping them engaged and thinking. I set problems mid-lesson for them to work through independently, then use their answers as a springboard for discussion and feedback. This back and forth dynamic means that misconceptions are caught early and genuine understanding is built rather than just surface level familiarity with a method.

I also know from personal experience that maths can be challenging and frustrating at times, and I believe this is an asset when teaching
