I worked in UK colleges for 22 years, teaching maths for the last 12 years. I have been tutoring online for the past 2 years.
Being a college tutor meant that most of my students had already failed their exams at least once. Many were disallusioned and believed that they were 'no good' at maths, when actually they just needed it explaing more carefully. My aim is to simplify maths and build confidence.
Since working online I have helped many students to realise their potential and have proven grade improvements including from predicted grade 1s and 2s to a grade 4. I have taught KS3 to students from Year 7 to Year 9 and have worked with several home-schooled students.
That is the advantage of 1:1 lessons. Each lesson is tailored to the individual student focussing on individual need. I use mailnly PowerPoints with clear explanations and practice questions with a focus on exam techniques. I annotate all work and send it to the students afterwards so that they have it for revision or future reference.
I assess prior knowledge to establish a starting point. I correct misconceptions and fill in the gaps and I always check understanding before moving on.
I have always had a good rapport with my students. I love teaching maths, but I also understand that for many, they are only taking maths because they have to and so I try to make it as painless as possible!
