My lessons are interactive and focused on actually understanding the maths rather than simply being shown a method and expected to memorise it. I like to work through problems together with the student, asking questions along the way and encouraging them to explain their thinking so I can identify exactly where they might be getting stuck.
Lessons are adapted to each student and what they want to improve. We can focus on particular topics, work through homework or past-paper questions, prepare for upcoming exams, or spend time strengthening areas where their understanding isn't quite there yet. I’ll usually demonstrate an approach first, then work through examples together before giving the student more independence as their confidence builds.
I have experience working at a tutoring centre as well as tutoring students privately, which has taught me that the same approach doesn't work for everyone. I've also experienced tutoring myself where lessons felt too passive or methods were explained without enough reasoning behind them. Because of this, I try to make my lessons engaging and two-way, making sure students are actively solving problems rather than just watching me do them.
My aim is for students to leave each lesson not only knowing how to answer a certain type of question, but understanding why the method works and feeling confident enough to apply it to unfamiliar problems themselves.
