I have a master's degree in English: Rhetoric & Composition, and ten years' experience as a writing professor and tutor. I'm also a textile artist, with considerable experience in sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, and embroidery.
As a teacher I believe in fostering a supportive and friendly learning environment where students can feel safe to ask questions and experiment. The best way to learn anything is to do it, so my approach centers on guided practice: on writing, on speaking, getting feedback, and trying again. Everyone has their own skills and struggles (and baggage from old teachers), so I consider it vital to tailor the instruction to each student. We'll talk about your goals, identify anything that's holding you back, find methods that make sense to you, and work through the process together.
For textile arts specifically, we'll design a project to get you started, and work through the steps together. I'll also encourage you to practice at home, to build up muscle memory. To begin with you'll use my materials and tools, so there's no need to spend on a lot of supplies until you're ready. We'll work on what you want to learn, build up the skills you'll need, and develop your confidence as a crafter. You'll have the benefit of my experience (and all the mistakes I've made!), and I'll be available by email to trouble-shoot or answer questions.
I firmly believe that anyone can improve who wants to learn, and is willing to put in the work.
