Dear Potential Student,
I am excited to advertise my skills as a ESOL English Lecturer. With over two decades of experience teaching Illustration and Animation across higher education, I have always been passionate about supporting students not just in their creative practice but in developing the confidence, study habits, and critical thinking skills that allow them to thrive academically and professionally.
Throughout my career, I have worked extensively with students of diverse backgrounds and learning needs. At Access Summit (Manchester University Study Skills Student Provision). I supported neurodiverse learners with their literacy, how to research, the development of coherent ideas and cogent enquiries, comprehending academic questions effectively and planning essays and dissertations to help realise student academic potential. I helped with the initiation of realistic workload management and embedding meaningful professional practice and reflective study skills within BA and MA courses at Manchester University. I have always seen study skills as the foundation that empowers students to unlock their potential. Many of my proudest moments as an educator come from helping students who doubted their abilities to find strategies that worked for them — and to graduate with both a strong academic background and a renewed sense of confidence.
Collaboration and innovation have been at the heart of my teaching. At the University of Greater Manchester, I was part of the team that redesigned the Animation and Illustration course, integrating new approaches such as 3D digital moving image and professional engagement with the wider industry. I created short courses - both digital and in person -which encouraged learners to think beyond their chosen subject and embrace new perspectives. These experiences reflect my ability to design and deliver engaging learning opportunities that foster adaptability, resilience, and independent learning — all central to study skills development.
Equally important, I bring experience of working one-to-one with students facing academic, personal, or emotional challenges. Whether through supporting students with dyslexia and autism, guiding asylum seekers through ESOL learning, or mentoring final-year undergraduates through the pressures of dissertations, I have consistently created safe, encouraging environments where students feel supported, valued, and capable.
I am now eager to bring this breadth of experience to Manchester Metropolitan University, where I began my career as an Associate Lecturer. It would be an exciting full-circle moment to return in a role dedicated to empowering students to succeed in every aspect of their academic journey.
Thank you for considering my application. I would be delighted to discuss how my skills and experience can contribute to your learning , and success.
Warm regards,
Melodie Neesom
