I am a third-year Computer Science student who is offering GCSE Maths and Computer Science tutoring. Having studied both subjects at A level and continuing to study Computer Science at university, I have a strong understanding of the underlying principles and problem-solving approaches needed to succeed in both subjects.
I aim to tailor my lessons to a student's individual needs, from solidifying their understanding of the fundamentals to working through more challenging topics, improving their general problem-solving skills and exam technique in the process. I want to encourage an environment where students feel free to ask questions, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of the key concepts within each topic, especially those which are often overlooked in schools.
In the case of Maths, my lessons would focus on improving students' core skills, practicing exam-style questions and developing effective problem-solving strategies. I would first focus on the initial concepts behind a topic by working through a few simple questions based on them, as difficulties with a new topic are often caused by minor misunderstandings of fundamental concepts. I would then move on to explaining the different approaches students can use to solve problems, before practicing questions of increasing difficulty.
When teaching Computer Science, I would aim to help students build their confidence by working through and explaining code snippets and syntax, before moving on to simple debugging exercises and encouraging them to create programs to solve problems relating to the current topic. When covering the theory side of the subject, I would work to explain the key concepts within the subject before practicing exam-style questions with the students.
While I do not have any formal tutoring experience, I do have some informal experience through assisting teachers with GCSE Maths lessons, as well as helping them with the subject in an after-school Maths club. In addition to this, I have completed both GCSEs and A-levels in Maths and Computer Science and am currently on track to achieve a 2:1 in my degree. Overall, I believe that these experiences have given me a strong foundation in both Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as significantly improving my problem-solving skills.
