Martin Jarvis

I'm a qualified primary teacher and Head of Year with 16 years' experience. I've taught in Devon schools and in leading international schools in Brunei, China and Qatar, such as Dulwich College Shanghai and Doha College. Now back home in Exeter, I help local children aged 5–11 build confidence and make real progress.

What I teach

I teach reading, writing, speaking and listening, and maths, and I also help with homework. I offer 11+ preparation from Year 4 through Year 5, so children are ready to sit the exam in the autumn term of Year 6.

What lessons are like

Every lesson is built around your child. Before we start, I talk with you about your child's needs, what they enjoy and where the gaps are. Then we set clear, achievable goals together. Lessons are warm, structured and fun, with plenty of encouragement and the right level of challenge. I use the same approaches that have worked well in my classrooms: clear modelling, lots of talk, short focused activities and regular practice and review, so new learning really sticks.
You can book one-off lessons or a block of lessons on a particular topic. Lessons can be one-to-one, or shared with a sibling or friend at a lower cost per child. Younger children have shorter lessons so they stay focused and enjoy learning.

Keeping you involved

Parents get regular, honest feedback after lessons, so you always know how your child is getting on and how you can help at home.
