I am an Italian translator from English, German and Spanish into Italian and I have been working as a translator for more than 30 years. I have taught Italian the past two years. I would avoid the one-size-fits-all approach, and tailor my lessons to the level of knowledge, interests and needs of each individual student, eg conversational italian vs formal writing or general culture vs specific subjects, in one word - flexibility. I would ask students what their interests are and at the beginning I would base my lessons on dialogues. Infact I use an empirical method and the grammatical rules are explained only afterwards. I would sometimes read literary passages or read Italian recipes because my aim is to transmit an entire culture, a way of living.
