My lessons are built around active recall, breaking tasks into manageable chunks, and targeting each student's individual weaknesses- an approach that works especially well for languages, where being able to recall vocabulary quickly is essential for real conversation. I use screen sharing along with Word and PowerPoint, bringing in visual cues and imagery to help make material easier to understand and remember. A typical lesson starts with a quick warm-up, moves into a main task, and wraps up with a summary to reinforce what's been covered. Homework can be set if you'd like extra practice between sessions, and I will mark it and return it in good time before the next lesson. I offer tutoring in History, English, Portuguese, and French at primary and GCSE level, drawing on my degree in History and Portuguese from Oxford, a year living and studying in Portugal, and experience working with children of all ages and abilities, including as a playworker and as a volunteer English tutor for a refugee student preparing for IELTS.
Having successfully navigated the Oxford admissions process myself as a History and Portuguese graduate, I offer tailored coaching for students applying to study History at Oxford or Cambridge. Sessions cover personal statement development, admissions test preparation, and interview technique - with a focus on building the kind of independent, well-evidenced thinking tutors look for, rather than rehearsed answers. We'll work on reading beyond the syllabus, articulating original arguments, and staying composed and curious under the pressure of an interview setting.
