My approach to tutoring has been shaped by my own progression through the subject, from GCSE, AS level, A level to my experience so far at university. Firstly, I would discuss and identify with the student areas in history that they struggle with. This could include exam techniques, essay writing, understanding content and analytical skills. Once an area has been identified, I will break topics down into manageable and understandable lessons by using timelines, comparative tables and model answers whilst also guiding students with questions. This encourages deeper thinking and helps a student build confidence in topic areas. I also encourage students to engage in discussions and debate, which helps to build upon key skills needed for exams and coursework, such as critical thinking, analysis, weighing up evidence and creating their own judgements. Working through model answers and practice exam questions, such as source questions, would also be key in lesson content. This puts key skills into practice and helps to ready students for exams. Moreover, to re-enforce what has been discussed in sessions, recall and writing activities further encourage long term retention which helps students feel more confident for exams and coursework. I would review any writing activities which have been done, in accordance to the exam boards mark scheme whilst also suggesting useful techniques and study tips. This would help students to reflect upon their own work and improve even further. Ultimately, it would be my aim to help students improve key skills and help grow their understanding and confidence in history through engaging and accessible tutoring sessions.
