Having experience as a private tutor before, I find it is best to ask the student what they are wanting to achieve before I start my courses. That can be a general idea or it can be a list of specific things, like a better grasp of vocabulary, or learning how to conjugate verbs. When I feel like I've understood that, I often use short, accessible presentations at the start, before proceeding into a fully interactive sessions.
