For more than six years, I have worked as a successful online English tutor; at present, my pupils range in age from Year 4 to Year 11. I teach SPAG skills, creative and analytical writing, comprehension and verbal reasoning, helping children to achieve success in winning an entrance to the schools of their choice at primary level, and coaching older students who are working towards GCSE success. Working within the public and private sectors, I have taught children with additional educational needs as well as mainstream pupils working towards the 11-plus test, independent school entrance and GCSE.
Working on Zoom, I give one-to-one lessons, usually an hour in length, although some younger pupils prefer a 45-minute session. Using texts that are appropriate to the individual pupil's age, skill set and learning support needs, and that are linked to the school curriculum, I prompt discussion, debate and response. Current texts include A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls, The Boy At The Back Of The Class and 1984. From these texts, I can draw creative writing practice, critical analysis, advanced vocabulary, sentence structure, plus SPAG skills - spelling, punctuation and grammar.
My lessons are very much a two-way dynamic; I encourage my pupils to have the confidence to offer their opinion and to be comfortable with getting things wrong, knowing that they are in a safe and non-judgmental space.
Fully DBS-checked and experienced, with children of my own, I can offer a lifetime of experience in caring for and teaching young people.
